Senator Lindsey Graham Dies at 71 Following Sudden Illness

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina has passed away at age 71.

The Republican lawmaker died on Saturday evening, July 11, following a sudden and brief illness, as announced through an official statement posted to his social media channels.

"On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness," the statement said. "Senator Graham's family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period."

Emergency responders were dispatched to his Capitol Hill residence Saturday night for what NBC News reported as a cardiac arrest situation.

Graham had served as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and maintained a prominent role as a close associate of President Donald Trump. He had been campaigning for a fifth consecutive six-year term in the Senate, which was scheduled to take place later in 2026.

The day prior to his death, Graham had met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He had also been slated to appear on Meet the Press on Sunday, July 12.

A native of South Carolina, Graham began his political career as an attorney. He was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1992, serving from 1993 to 1995. He subsequently ran for the U.S. House seat vacated by Congressman Butler Derrick, becoming the first Republican elected to represent South Carolina's 3rd congressional district in more than a century. His tenure in the House of Representatives spanned from 1995 to 2003.

Graham transitioned to the Senate in 2003 following his election, and he continued to serve in that chamber until his death. He had won five consecutive Senate elections throughout his tenure.
