Rebecca Luna, a prominent TikTok creator, has passed away on her own terms. The influencer died Saturday, July 25, at the age of 49 following a young-onset Alzheimer's diagnosis. She elected to pursue medical aid in dying (MAID) and publicly shared her decision, chronicling her experience over recent months.

"Rebecca passed away July 25th at approximately 1:15 p.m. surrounded by her loved ones. Thank you for your support and privacy," read a statement posted to her account over the weekend. Her GoFundMe page also received an update from Maya, her eldest daughter.

Her account bio identified her as a "Young-Onset Alzheimer's and MAID Advocate."

Understanding Medical Aid in Dying

Medical aid in dying represents an end-of-life option through which a mentally capable, terminally ill adult can request medication from a healthcare provider that they may choose to take to pass away peacefully, according to Compassion & Choices. In the United States, all MAID laws mandate that individuals have a terminal diagnosis with a prognosis of six months or less to live—a core requirement that defines the practice.

Luna's Reasoning and Personal Journey

Luna established her GoFundMe to cover end-of-life expenses. In her fundraiser description, she explained her situation: "Hi, as a lot of you know I was diagnosed at age 48 with Young Onset Alzheimer's. I'm 49 and I will be accessing MAID as my decline has come faster than I had hoped. I've been a single mama (proudly) all my life so My lovely followers suggested I do a go fund me for the end of life expenses so I don't leave my loved ones behind with that responsibility on top of their own grief. All blessings and well wishes are warmly appreciated and I love you all. I couldn't have come this far without you."

Over the course of numerous videos, Luna discussed her diagnosis openly, shared details about medical appointments, and educated her audience about available end-of-life options. Earlier that week, she announced she had moved her MAID date forward from early August to that weekend.

Luna's Final Message

In her final video, Luna reflected on her decision: "Prior to the dates changing for the last year and a half has been legally and medically not my choice. But for the last two weeks I've been making the decision. And it's a hard decision to make, because I'm living in a body that doesn't feel comfortable, safe, good, nothing. It feels terrible. And so the idea of waiting two weeks felt like too much."

She continued, emphasizing personal agency: "This is when I get to prioritize myself, and I haven't done that my whole life."

Luna spoke about advocating for her younger self, saying she was standing up for the 5-year-old version of herself that "nobody stood up for."

Closing with a message to her followers, she said: "I hope if I leave this planet that's the only thing I teach — and that's the only thing that somebody gets something out of — is that you just need to act your way into loving yourself. If I can do it, you can do it too."
