The 84-year-old Kentucky senator addressed his recent medical situation in a statement released Sunday, July 12, providing constituents with specifics about his hospitalization and health status.

In his message, Mitch McConnell acknowledged the questions and concerns from his constituents regarding his absence from the Senate in recent weeks. He reflected on the difficulty of discussing personal health matters, particularly for his generation, while noting his lifelong experience managing physical challenges stemming from childhood polio.

McConnell detailed the circumstances of his hospitalization, explaining that he sustained a fall last month that resulted in a brief loss of consciousness and required medical intervention. He emphasized that comprehensive testing by his medical team ruled out several serious conditions: no broken bones, no concussion, no cardiac event, no stroke, and no tumors or hemorrhages. During his hospital stay, he developed a mild case of pneumonia, which he indicated has been managed.

The senator reported that he has been complying fully with his physicians' recommendations and undergoing extensive testing to determine what triggered the incident. He noted his transition from hospital care to a rehabilitation facility where he continues physical therapy to rebuild his strength.

While McConnell stated he remains unable to return to voting on the Senate floor at this time on medical advice, he emphasized his continued engagement with legislative work.
