Laura Vandervoort Opens Up About Miscarriage in Emotional Instagram Post

Laura Vandervoort is speaking publicly about her miscarriage for the first time, sharing a deeply personal account on Instagram this week.

The Smallville star, 41, posted on Wednesday, July 8, revealing her pregnancy loss through a series of sonogram images and positive pregnancy tests paired with a message directed to the child she lost.

"Loss. It's been 2 months and nine days since we lost you. And it still hurts. Miscarriage loss is a loss. A death that has no funeral and a life no one knew existed but a few," she wrote in the opening of her post.

Vandervoort described the moments of hope that preceded the loss, noting that she and her husband Adam Coates had heard their baby's heartbeat on two separate occasions, with the second instance showing a stronger rhythm than the first. She detailed the anticipation that had filled her life during the pregnancy.

"Plans that were made, nursery ideas in my heart, excitement and hope. Fear and love," she reflected.

The actress went on to explain how the grief has permeated her daily life in the months since the miscarriage. Each week brings reminders of how far along she would have been, and encounters with other pregnant women or pregnancy announcements trigger painful reflections on the future she had envisioned.

"Every week I know how far along I would have been. Every pregnancy announcement stabs in ways I wish it wouldn't. Every pregnant woman I see I wonder if that's what I would have looked like," she shared.

Vandervoort also recounted the traumatic experience of learning about the loss at the emergency room, describing how a doctor informed her and Coates that their baby's heartbeat had stopped in front of the waiting room full of people.

"Our visit to the emergency room that day was made even more traumatizing by a doctor who told us our babies heart had stopped in front of an entire waiting room of people. But we move forward in the day to day activities, like nothing happened. But something did happen… something life changing and devastating for us both. And it's still heavy. You are never forgotten little one," she wrote.

The actress concluded her message by encouraging others to speak more openly about pregnancy loss and the grief that accompanies it.
