Larry Birkhead Objects to Anna Nicole Smith Doctor Biopic, Cites Impact on Daughter Dannielyn

Larry Birkhead is voicing strong disapproval of an upcoming film about the physician at the center of Anna Nicole Smith's death in 2007.

The forthcoming movie "Trust Me, I'm a Doctor" focuses on Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, with actor Kal Penn taking on the role of the doctor and Abbie Cornish portraying Smith. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight on July 9, Birkhead, 53, expressed his opposition to the project, describing it as causing "harm" to his 19-year-old daughter Dannielyn, Smith's child.

"We're not involved in this production," Birkhead stated. "And we absolutely object to any of Anna Nicole's, my life, my daughter's life being used in a movie and being made characters out of by someone who was a doctor that supposedly people were supposed to trust."

Kapoor faced charges following Smith's fatal overdose at age 39, including conspiracy, excessive prescribing of controlled substances to an addict, and fraudulently obtaining medications under false identities. He was ultimately acquitted of all charges. Kapoor subsequently published a memoir with the same title as the film in 2017, which serves as the source material for the biopic.

During the same interview, Birkhead reflected on Cornish's portrayal of the late model and actress. While acknowledging that the 43-year-old performer may be talented, he felt her interpretation fell short of capturing Smith's essence.

"I recently saw the actress that is portraying Anna," he remarked. "I'm sure she's probably a nice girl and a great actress but I don't think she quite embodied Anna Nicole."

Birkhead clarified that he doesn't hold Cornish responsible, noting that other actresses have similarly struggled with the role in previous productions. "There's been a Lifetime Movie. There's been a Law & Order episode," he pointed out. "I have yet to see someone who actually embodies the spirit and the looks and the persona of Anna Nicole."

Birkhead also expressed disappointment in Kapoor, saying the physician had previously assured him his days of seeking media attention were finished. "Fast forward almost 20 years later, and this doctor continues to make the rounds," the photographer observed. "I've warned them about the harm and the emotional distress that this puts on not just myself, but also most importantly, Dannielynn."

In response to the film's production, Birkhead has filed a complaint against Kapoor with the California Medical Board regarding his involvement in the project. "I'm just gonna let the process work itself out," he said, "and see what they have to say about that."

The film is set to arrive on October 16.
