Alice Oseman on Bringing Heartstopper to a Close: Why the Final Season Became a Movie

Heartstopper Forever arrives next week, and creator Alice Oseman is reflecting on the bittersweet process of concluding the beloved series.

In conversations with Teen Vogue, Oseman opened up about the strategic choice to pivot the show's final season into a feature film, rather than continuing with a traditional television format.

Focusing on the Core Story

The shift to a movie required careful consideration about scope and storytelling. Oseman explained that she faced a fundamental decision: either follow the ensemble approach used throughout the series, which would mean shortened arcs for supporting characters, or concentrate the narrative on Nick and Charlie at its center.

"I think that would be a better film because we get to really focus on these characters, go on that journey with them and not feel like we're missing a load of stuff," Oseman shared. She emphasized that despite narrowing the primary focus, she remained committed to honoring the entire cast. "I did make sure that everyone has their goodbye in the film," she noted, stressing how important it was to give the supporting characters meaningful moments and closure.

Growing Up With the Story

A recurring conversation surrounding Heartstopper has centered on the inclusion of sexual content. Oseman addressed this head-on, acknowledging that opinions remain divided among fans about the creative direction.

"You have to tell the story you want to tell, and particularly when something gets as big as Heartstopper, you can't please everyone," she said. "There's always going to be people who are not content with the direction you've taken a story."

The characters have progressively aged throughout both the series and film, a deliberate choice to reflect their maturation. Nick and Charlie stand on the threshold of adulthood, and Oseman felt it was essential for the narrative to evolve alongside them.

"We wanted to feel like the show is growing up alongside these characters and the audience," she explained. "Nick and Charlie are almost adults, they're pretty much on the cusp of adulthood, and we know that sex is a part of their relationship, and so it felt like a really natural thing to put in the film, and it's the same in the books as well."

Saying Goodbye

When asked how she's processing the series' conclusion, Oseman described the experience as mixed emotions. While she's genuinely proud of how the story concludes on her own terms, the reality of parting with these characters is settling in slowly.

"Right now it's very bittersweet, like I'm really sad to be saying goodbye to these characters and I'm going to miss them so much," she shared. "It's really emotional to be ending these stories, but also that's all wrapped up in the feeling of pride and happiness that I got to finish this story in the way that I wanted to."

Heartstopper Forever debuts on Netflix on July 17.
