Rumer Willis Opens Up About Split from Derek Richard Thomas, Says Wedding Was 'Reckoning Moment'

Rumer Willis is reflecting on her breakup with Derek Richard Thomas and the pivotal moment that prompted her decision to walk away.
The 37-year-old actress and the 31-year-old singer first connected in May 2022 and went on to have their daughter, Louetta, in April 2023. By August 2024, Willis announced that the two had parted ways.
During an appearance on the May 20 episode of The Inside Edit, Willis spoke with host Maeve Reilly about what led to the end of their relationship. She pinpointed a specific event as the catalyst: Reilly's June 2024 wedding to Zach Quittman.
"Your wedding was a huge reckoning moment for me," Willis shared. "I heard your vows and I just realized that the situation I was in was never going to look like that, no matter how much effort I put in."
Willis described being emotionally moved during the ceremony. "I was just watching you guys — just weeping, holding my child," she explained. "And I just thought, you know what? I need to have more value for myself."
The actress emphasized that the realization pushed her to take action despite her fears. "I need to go and like, leave, no matter how scared I am and find something that looks like this, because I want that," she said.
Since the split, Willis has been working on rebuilding her confidence. "I was just starting to feel back in her power again after going through the breakup," she reflected, describing the relationship as "really brutal and challenging."
Willis expressed pride in how she's navigated the transition. "I'm so proud of myself, you know? I work hard and I show up for my kid and it's such a privilege," she noted. "It's such a privilege to be a mom. It makes me so happy."
Looking forward, Willis indicated she's established clearer boundaries for future relationships and has set ambitious personal goals. She revealed plans to marry within the next year and expand her family significantly.
"I'm gonna meet this wonderful man," Willis said of her aspirations. "I can't wait — I'm gonna have, like, seven more … I want to have like, eight kids. I'm so excited."
