Rebecca Gayheart Returns to 'Jawbreaker' Universe in Upcoming Musical Stage Adaptation

Nearly three decades after her iconic turn in the cult classic film, Rebecca Gayheart is making her way back to the Jawbreaker universe—this time on stage.

The actress will take on the role of Principal Sherwood in the forthcoming Jawbreaker The Musical, a limited workshop engagement scheduled for fall 2026 at the Hudson Theatre in Los Angeles. The part was originally portrayed by Carol Kane in the 1999 movie, where Gayheart played lead character Julie Freeman.

Gayheart brings substantial theatrical credentials to the production. She previously appeared in two Broadway productions: Steel Magnolias in 2005 and Boeing-Boeing in 2008.

Writer and director Darren Stein expressed his enthusiasm about staging the musical adaptation in its original setting. "It feels right to launch the musical in LA where the film was shot and I couldn't be more thrilled with the team we've assembled," he shared.

The stage musical is being positioned as a high-gloss teen thriller that chronicles the ascent and subsequent downfall of an unforgiving clique of teenage girls. When their grip on power spirals into tragedy, the narrative unfolds with elements of pop concert energy and sharp comedic timing. The production aims to examine themes of power, identity, and survival within a culture fixated on social status, blending moments of exhilaration with darker consequences.

Further casting announcements are expected to arrive in the coming months.
