Rami Malek's 'The Man I Love' Takes Cannes by Storm With 8-Minute Standing Ovation

Rami Malek is earning some of his strongest reviews yet for his work in The Man I Love, which debuted at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival this week.
The Oscar-winning actor joined co-stars Tom Sturridge and Luther Ford on the red carpet Wednesday evening (May 20) in Cannes, France, alongside director and co-writer Ira Sachs.
Film Overview
Described as a "musical fantasia of a city under duress," the film is set during the AIDS crisis of the late 1980s in New York City. It centers on Jimmy George, a Downtown performance artist navigating an extraordinary moment between great illness and death—a time when beauty and love remain possible nonetheless.
The cast also includes Rebecca Hall and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, though neither attended the premiere.
Festival Reception
The film received an eight-minute standing ovation from the Cannes audience, with Malek visibly moved to tears during the applause.
Sachs addressed the crowd afterward, saying: "This is a film about what we can bring to each other through art, through love, through pain, through memory. And I hope there are some memories we share from this evening for the festival and our love of cinema."
Both Malek and Sachs wore Zegna to the event. Sturridge attended with his longtime partner Alexa Chung, with whom he has been in a relationship since 2022. The couple both wore Dior.
