Directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert are negotiating with Matt Damon to headline their latest feature project, marking their first film since their Oscar-winning success with Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The filmmakers have been developing the concept for three years. The story incorporates themes of global warming and time travel with a potential superhero element, unfolding across two distinct timelines—one in the 1980s and another in the present day. The narrative centers on teenage protagonists, at least within the 1980s storyline, according to reports.

Ryan Gosling was initially the preferred choice for a supporting role as the father of one of the young leads, though those plans fell through. Gosling had initially committed to the part but later requested a larger role and sought script modifications. While the Daniels weren't opposed to the idea in principle, a more fundamental constraint emerged: the production had to commence by late summer or early fall to capitalize on a California tax credit. Accommodating Gosling's requests would have required extensive rewrites and additional time neither party had available. The situation resolved quickly, with Gosling exiting the project within a matter of weeks.

Jack Black was also in consideration for the role before Damon became the frontrunner. The search is now underway to cast the actor who will portray Damon's character's son.

In separate news, Damon and Ben Affleck are facing a lawsuit connected to their Netflix film The Rip. Two Miami-Dade police officers are pursuing legal action, claiming the actors defamed them through their portrayal of law enforcement characters in the movie.
