Kylie Minogue Opens Up About Second Cancer Diagnosis in New Netflix Documentary

The Australian pop icon has disclosed a health journey she kept private for years. In her recently launched KYLIE documentary on Netflix, 57-year-old Kylie Minogue revealed she received a second cancer diagnosis in early 2021, nearly two decades after her initial breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in 2005.
"My second cancer diagnosis was in early 2021. I was able to keep that to myself … Not like the first time," she said, contrasting the private nature of her recent battle with the public attention surrounding her first experience with the disease.
"Thankfully, I got through it. Again. And all is well," Minogue shared. "Hey, who knows what's around the corner, but pop music nurtures me … my passion for music is greater than ever."
The singer explained her hesitation in making the diagnosis public, particularly following the breakthrough success of her 2023 Grammy-winning track "Padam Padam." She acknowledged struggling to determine the appropriate moment for such a revelation.
"I don't feel obliged to tell the world, and actually I just couldn't at the time because I was just a shell of a person," she reflected. "I didn't want to leave the house again at one point. 'Padam Padam' opened so many doors for me but on the inside I knew that cancer wasn't just a blip in my life. And I really just wanted to say what happened so I can let go of it. I'd sit through interviews and every opportunity I thought, 'now's the time', but I kept it to myself."
The artist also connected her 2023 album Tension to this period, specifically pointing to the song "Story," which features lyrics including "I had a secret that I kept to myself … Turn another page, baby take the stage."
"I needed to have something that marked that time," she explained regarding the track's significance in the documentary.
KYLIE is now streaming on Netflix.
