HBO Unveils First Look at 'Lanterns' With Premiere Date Announcement

HBO is giving fans their first glimpse of the upcoming DC series Lanterns, unveiling a teaser trailer that hints at the show's darker, grounded tone.
The limited series centers on two intergalactic law enforcement officers navigating a mysterious case rooted in America's heartland. Kyle Chandler takes on the role of Hal Jordan, while Aaron Pierre portrays John Stewart, a newly recruited member of the Green Lantern Corps. The pair find themselves investigating a murder that pulls them deeper into an earthbound mystery.
Laura Linney joins the ensemble cast, which also features Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones. Nathan Fillion rounds out the lineup, reprising his role as Guy Gardner from James Gunn's upcoming Superman film.
According to HBO's official description: "The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland."
The creative team behind the project brings considerable pedigree to the DC adaptation. Damon Lindelof, the mind behind Watchmen and The Leftovers, co-created the series with Chris Mundy of Ozark fame and acclaimed comics writer Tom King.
Lanterns will premiere on August 16, 2026.
The project represents one of several major DC releases in development. This year will see the arrival of a standalone Supergirl film in June and Mike Flanagan's Clayface adaptation. Looking ahead, Matt Reeves' The Batman: Part II arrives in late 2027, featuring newcomers Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson alongside the returning cast.
