The 'Grey's Anatomy' universe is expanding. ABC announced on Tuesday, May 19 that a new spinoff series is in development, set in Texas and slated to premiere during the network's 2027 midseason lineup with a straight-to-series order.

The project brings together key figures from the original medical drama. Shonda Rhimes, the franchise creator, is co-writing and executive producing the series, working alongside Meg Marinis, the current showrunner for 'Grey's Anatomy.' Ellen Pompeo, who has anchored the flagship series, will also serve as an executive producer.

"I am incredibly excited to expand the Grey's Anatomy universe," Marinis said in a statement. "This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey's for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas. I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it."

While the spinoff will center on a fresh ensemble of doctors, it is expected to maintain connections to the broader 'Grey's Anatomy' world through the potential involvement of existing characters from the original series.
