Emily Henry Weighs In on Beach Read Casting Choices as Production Looms

Emily Henry is addressing the reception to the recently announced casting for her novel's big-screen adaptation.
When Patrick Schwarzenegger and Phoebe Dynevor were confirmed to lead the film adaptation of "Beach Read" last month, the announcement sparked mixed reactions from devoted fans. Now the author herself is opening up about navigating those responses.
During an appearance on the Today show, Henry reflected on the fan discourse surrounding the leads. "I also have to sit back and let it unfold. It is our baby — the readers' and my baby — but it's also the filmmakers' baby and the studio's baby, and I'm along for the ride with the readers, and we just have to trust the vision," she explained.
The author expressed particular enthusiasm about the creative team steering the project. "Yulin Kuang, our writer-director, is so brilliant and I know she's gonna do an amazing job," Henry noted.
Beyond the two leads already in place, Henry hinted at additional casting announcements on the horizon. "I also just keep getting emails about everyone else that they're locking in, which is not public news yet, so I can't share, but I'm getting really excited. They're starting shooting very soon," she revealed.
The film centers on January Andrews, a romance novelist grappling with grief and writer's block following her father's death and the discovery of long-buried family secrets. Spending the summer at his Michigan beach house to prepare it for sale, she reconnects with Gus Everett, a college rival turned fellow author. Both creatively blocked, the pair challenge each other to swap genres over the summer while maintaining a strict no-romance agreement—a pact that doesn't quite survive the season.
The 2020 novel marks one of several Henry adaptations currently in development for film and television.
