The beloved animated series Rick and Morty is heading to theaters. Warner Bros. has begun early development on a feature film based on Adult Swim's long-running comedy, with director Jacob Hair—who has helmed episodes of the show—currently in talks to direct the project.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news. Story specifics remain under wraps at this stage.

Since its 2013 debut, Rick and Morty has become a cornerstone of basic cable comedy, consistently drawing large audiences. The series now boasts more than 80 episodes, with season nine premiering on May 24, 2026. The show has already secured a renewal through season 12.

Co-creator Dan Harmon previously discussed the movie prospect with Warner Bros. leadership in 2023, expressing enthusiasm about the direction such a project could take. He outlined his vision to The Hollywood Reporter: "My philosophy would be to just take a Rick and Morty adventure, and spend a bunch of extra money on it and make it 90 minutes long. Not to try to earn its feature status by virtue of canonical dramatic tone shifts or anything like that, but rather to just make it a super badass episode of Rick and Morty."

In related news, a spinoff series centered on President Curtis, a character voiced by Keith David, is slated to premiere on Adult Swim later in 2026. Additionally, Warner Bros. is developing a new Scooby-Doo anime project that will feature several returning voice actors from the franchise.
